Been out of a medicine (LDN) I've been taking for
MS, since early last week. Went to the doctor's office om Friday because they
wouldn't refill is w/o seeing me first. Then they wrote the "new"
prescription refill wrong. Called the office on Friday afternoon last
week and left a urgent message. Went and talked to them in PERSON on
Saturday, have called the office AGAIN today, and I STILL haven't heard a
fucking word! :-(
Update:
Called again and talked to a nurse about it today (Tues.), who talked to the doctor, who wouldn't rewrite
the prescription for 3 mg. because that medicine "only comes in 50 mg.
tablets". DUH! That's why I have it COMPOUNDED with 3 mg. of the
tablet with the rest being filler to fill
the CAPSULE. Not a tablet!! The nurse then told me that the doctor
doesn't want to have a pharmacy in Florida (where I've been getting refills for 5 yrs) do the compounding for
someone in Texas. I then told her, "Walgreen's does compounding right
here in Austin". Yet the doctor INSISTED that I just split the tablet in
quarters and then take 1 quarter in the morning and one in the evening.
Again, I told the nurse that I would then be taking 12.5 mg. twice a day
after I've been taking 3 mg/day for 5 years. I once took 4.5 mg/day
and it was TOO MUCH, so I refuse to take 12.5 mg doses twice a day! The
doctor told the nurse that she didn't understand why the doctor she is
replacing would prescribe only 3 mg doses (50 mg tablet form is to help heroin addicts kick their habit, which I don't have). That's when I told the nurse
that he didn't, he just wrote a refill for it because a doctor in
Missouri had been writing it for 3 mg capsules for the last 5 years.
SIGH. I told the nurse to give the doctor the URL for the site explaining
the medicine and reasons for that dosage, then I faxed them/her the first
page of the web site. If push comes to shove, I do have a appointment
with a neurologist in November a few weeks from now. Although I've been
completely out of said medicine since early last week Maybe I don't really need it anyway. I do want to change clinics though!

In the mean time (of finding new clinic) get the Rx filled and take the med different than prescribed. It will be hard to get to 3 mg from 50mg without a very delicate scale but break it in half, then half again--you are at about 12 mg, from there nibble on the quarter for four days. Be pragmatic--doctors are sometimes to busy to pay attention (I have other theories too) to everyone and *I* am *always* one that falls through the cracks. You need your meds and you have the ability to take them; you are not being Rxed too little--break it up.
Oh, and if nibbling on that quarter for three days is too much, nibble for five days instead.
I meant four days not three... man wish I could edit what is already there.
Todd that is insane! I hate when we have to jump through hoops for medical stuff and educate our medical care givers. (and I use that last word loosely sometimes!) Good luck and i hope the new clinic is much much better.
I just did the math. If I can cut the tablets into 16ths then I could get close to the dosage I'm supposed to take :( I dunno, Tana, what a pain in the ass.
Lee... thanks. It'll all work out eventually.
More a pain than dealing with the idiots at the doc office? You know, one time, when we still lived in CO, my hubby faxed a form into his docs office for his doc to sign. The doc's office manager faxed him the signed form back as well as an unsigned copy telling him she was sending him back his original form in case he needed it. Then she couldn't figure out why she kept getting it back. He gave up trying to explain it to her after a few minutes. It is really sad when you think about. That woman ran the office and she couldn't figure out why she couldn't fax back the original document.
I would be dead now if I depended on medical professionals to tend to my health. Every once in a while I morbidly look at the mortality/survival rate for late stage 3 rectal cancer; they are not good numbers. Yes, you should find a doc willing to work with you on the meds you feel help you but until then (and even after) *you* need to watch out for yourself.
Tana. Tana, Tana, deep down I know you speak about what some people call 'the truth', which is why I will more than likely go with your suggestions. Yes, in the end it's up to me to take care of me. I just wish "it" didn't have to be that way. On the other hand... there are fingers.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. (Most people would just type LOL but you know me.)
If you had fingers on only one hand that would be funnier but not that bad for a low-oxygen redneck. (Speaking of that, since you moved to a lower elevation, do you catch yourself breathing really shallow breaths at times? That can be a private discussion if you like.)
Back to the other stuff:
I really wish it wasn't that way too--big time. I am sure I mentioned my family curse with medical professionals. Just when I think I might be having breakthrough on an issue I have had for seven years, one crops up on Tink and I am getting blown off by the same doc that just might be open to help remedy my issue. And there was this little issue just in the last couple weeks with the younger that the doc's office has me a little worried/irritated about. Arrrrgggg!
Part of the problem is the specialization of the medical profession (GPs having to send a patient to aa podiatrist to remove glass from a foot, true story), part of the problem is the people that become doctors for the wrong reason, and part of it is the insurance system screwing with healthcare; combined we are lucky to be able to get a bone cast properly without selling a kidney to do it.
I don't pay any attention to my breathing.
