For a different mental image of "debts", think of each one has a weight hanging from the ceiling, holding you down. As you pay-off each one, a little less weight is holding you down. By the time you cut the last string, you can fly. Fly to what, where? That, my friend, is one thing you'll have. More time to think about how it is you want to fly.

The challenge is, though, that sometimes a person simply does not earn enough to pay for basic needs, let alone for the little extras in life. Even buying nothing but sale items, how do you pay the dental bills unless you have a plan? (I don't). What if you work full-time and overtime and still cannot earn enough to "have a life" unless you you the plastic card? I don't know. I have plastic cards and pay for insurance on them (if I become to ill to pay, they payments will be made, or if I die the balance will be paid). I think the key is to keep debts manageable, but in today's society many cannot completely eliminate debt. Student loans for example. It takes a long time to pay those back.
I understand what you're saying. If you don't have the money, then it's very hard to pay any debts off. You can file bankruptcy every 7 years, but I don't know if student loans can be declared unpayable since they're government loans. I've heard there are ways to get them either drastically cut down or dismissed, don't know how though. But if it's been less than 7 years since a previous bankruptcy, I guess you just do the best you can, whether that includes credit cards or not.
